Several years ago, I started adding occasional group classes to my studio. I held group classes once a month on Saturdays as a way to get students together. When I did this, I was left with a group of about 5-7 students of different ages and playing abilities. For that reason, I started arranging music so that a group of students of mixed levels could play together.
This summer, I’ve been making a few new arrangements for the holidays. Keep reading to learn more about how I set up the Christmas piano ensemble arrangements.
1. Teacher Instructions
Each ensemble set starts with teacher instructions for how to use the ensemble music. I always suggest starting with the easiest parts first. Playing the simplest parts together first allows students to listen without as much concentration on notes. If mistakes occur, students will develop the ability to continue playing without stopping the group.
I created the ensemble music with the idea of 3-4 students playing together. However, a friend told me she used the music as a duet for two siblings to play together. Check out this post for how to use the music for one, two, or more pianos.
Info Page
An information section provides history information for the song, rhythm practice, and a visual chord guide for students who are playing the harmony part.
Melody
A part for melody only is notated.
Bass
Bass notes are notated in simplest form first. Most of the arrangements include variations of the bass by doubling as octaves or changing the rhythm. The bass part work well for a beginner in the group. They can play single notes while developing their rhythm and listening skills.
Harmony
Harmony is notated as blocked chords first and then includes 2-3 variations of accompaniment patterns. Each variation advances to more difficult accompaniment patterns.
Melody, Bass, Harmony
A final page with melody, bass, and chord symbols notated all on one page is provided for teachers.
