Do you use the One Minute Club in your studio? This classic game to motivate students in note-naming was created by Jane Bastien. (See the original one-minute cards.)
Susan Paradis offers many resources for this club on her website. Students need to name and/or play note names from flashcards in one minute. You can design this game for your students’ needs. For example, younger students could name just treble clef notes or space notes. Older students could name and play only ledger line notes.
In my studio, I work with students to name 23 line and space notes on the Grand Staff.
I created a chart so that students could see their progress. The first step is to work on naming space notes in just 30 seconds. Then students do the same for the line notes. Lastly, we combine the line and space notes. Students work to name and/or play the 23 flashcards in one minute.
On the chart, you can either color in the boxes or put small incentive stickers. The big star at the bottom is for when students have completed all of the cards in one minute. You can decorate the large star however you’d like.
