This summer, I finished making a new workbook for young beginners, My First Piano Workbook. I had ages 4-6 in mind while creating this workbook. The pages in this workbook include lots of fun, cute images to capture a child’s eye.
The lessons in this workbook cover the topics that are introduced during the first year of piano lessons. The pages in the workbook ask students to draw lines and color. There is very little writing since it is geared towards young piano beginners.
Keep reading to learn more about the topics in this workbook.
Topics in My First Piano Workbook
Lesson 1: Right Hand and Left Hand, Finger Numbers
In this unit, students will practice identifying right hand and left hand. They will also learn the finger numbers of each hand. The unit finishes with an activity page for students to practice tapping certain fingers.
Lesson 2: The Musical Alphabet
For this unit, students will learn The Musical Alphabet letters A through G. They will learn to recognize which letters belong in the Musical Alphabet in addition to knowing the correct order of the letters in The Musical Alphabet. I kept this unit simple for young beginners. More in-depth practice with The Musical Alphabet (such as steps and skips) can be done with these Musical Alphabet Worksheets.
Lesson 3: The Black Keys
In The Black Keys unit, students will practice recognizing groups of two or three black keys.
Lesson 4: Rhythm
The rhythm unit covers the notes quarter, half, dotted half, and whole. For rests, quarter rests and half rests are covered. Each note and rest has its own page for students to practice learning the value of each. Lots of fun images are included in this unit!
Lesson 5: The White Keys C, D, & E
In this unit, students will learn to recognize the keys C, D, & E on the piano. The pages in this unit are in the format of coloring keys and connecting keys to the correct letter name.
Lesson 6: The White Keys F, G, A, & B
The white keys F, G, A, and B are covered in this unit. The pages are also in the format of coloring keys on piano images and connecting keys to the correct letter name.
Lesson 7: The Staff
In this introduction to the staff, students will learn to recognize treble and bass clef and which hand plays each. They will also practice recognizing and drawing line and space notes. This unit is a short introduction to the staff. Once students start learning steps on the staff and reading music, they can move onto the Prep A Piano Workbook.
