Being a member of FJH Publishing’s New Release Club allows me to learn and review new music on a regular basis. The last shipment was big so I’m still going through music (slowly, but surely). Martin Cuellar’s Mysterious Journey was one of my favorites from that shipment.
Mysterious Journey is an intermediate piano solo. The entire piece is in 6/8 and e minor. The beginning section starts with a lyrical, but haunting melody in the right hand. The middle section builds tension with different chord inversions before the return of the opening melody. The left hand plays broken octaves in the coda while the right hand plays two-note slurs. The haunting melody then dies away for the end of the piece.
I love the melody of this piece. I especially liked the broken octaves in the coda. It has a different sound from the typical lyrical solo for piano students.
