Sometimes I like to do a simple, quick rhythm activity to finish up the last few minutes of a lesson. Here are four ways you can reinforce rhythm with students in under five minutes:
- Tap pre-made rhythmic examples
I like to use the rhythms on the Piano Safari Sight Reading & Rhythm Cards. - Create rhythms
Let students create their own rhythm using these cards. My students really like taking turns with me! I let them make a rhythm and then I make one. We line the cards up on the piano lid. - Rhythm clap-backs
I tap a rhythm to the student and then they clap it back. This is something you can do in under a minute right before the student leaves. If a student can easily clap them back, I like to challenge them with a longer rhythm. - Shake & Tap
I keep a binder with these pages laminated. This activity especially helps me keep younger students engaged, because they love to roll the dice. All they have to do is roll the dice and then we tap the corresponding rhythm. Shake & Tap is available for both simple and compound meters.
